Wheels in motion for Auckland cycling growth

Cycling's popularity has grown in the country's largest city, with Auckland Transport recording 3.67 million bike trips being made last year.

This was a 6.2 per cent increase on the 3.45 million trips recorded in 2016.

The bike usage was recorded by 28 regional and city centre counters across Auckland.

Based on this increased popularity, Auckland Transport estimated 7200 trips, which could have been made in a car each day, were instead taken on a bike.

It said if all the cars from the trips saved were lined up from end to end in traffic, they would stretch 32km.

Auckland Transport walking, cycling and road safety manager Kathryn King attributed the boost in popularity to new cycling infrastructure.

"We expect to see the growth continue over 2018 as we continue delivery of a safe cycling network," she said.

November proved the network's busiest month, with 355,088 trips recorded, while March was next busiest with 345,156.

Tuesday, November 21, was the busiest day, with 17,529 trips, while Tuesdays took out the top nine busiest days recorded.

The new Waterview Shared Path was busiest on weekends, with an average weekend day featuring 368 trips.

The busiest day on the new path during its first three months of opening was November 5 with 809 trips.

An Auckland Transport survey in 2017 found 41 per cent of riders undertake point-to-point journeys, such as to the shops, work, places of study and to get to public transport.
